The Sinner, by Petra Hammesfahr

“The Sinner” is a chilling, intense novel that exposes human nature’s darkest and most sinister characteristics. The story revolves around the character Cora Bender. Cora battles with her past and the haunting memories and nightmares it brings her. She acts out and lashes out due to her trauma, and her husband, Gereon, is the obvious target. Hammesfahr authentically delves into Cora’s psyche.

While the novel’s heavy themes are guilt, trauma, and shame, Cora’s story leads readers to ponder morality and what it truly means to be redeemed. The novel lends itself to the psychological thriller genre, although transcending it because of its layered and nuanced storytelling. Readers learn of the murder committed by Cora but are left to wonder what may have happened in her earlier life that might have caused her to act so violently. As one continues to read, it’s not only about finding that out; it is also about the need to understand her.
