Farewell Roger Federer

One of my favourite musicians in the world Ellie Goulding had the hottest ticket of the night, when at this season’s Laver Cup event she sang 2 of her hits Falling for You and Let It Burn; bidding farewell to the 20-time singles grand slam champion Roger Federer. Federer had told Björn Borg ahead of attending the event that he wasn’t sure that his troublesome knee would hold up, particularly for singles play but that he would play a doubles match.

In his doubles match with Nadal, the pair did have a match point, but a win was not to be as they lost to team world’s American duo Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock 4-6 7-6 11-9 after 2 hours and 13 minutes.

Audiences around the world who tuned in as well as fans at the O2 Arena in London were treated to incredible scenes as Mirka and the kids came down to the court to hug and comfort Federer, who said that he was not sad, but happy. He was obviously very emotional after the match; although the Laver Cup event was not an event which would be officially counted as his last professional match on the ATP calendar.Federer last played a singles match at this season’s grass slam Wimbledon, where he lost in straights 6-3 7-6(6-4) and 6-0 to Polish player Hubert Hurkacz.
